Lower Township contains various historical sites for visitors who like to connect with the past. Nature lovers can observe wildlife in Cape May Point State Park and Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area. There are several wineries here along with the Cape May Lighthouse. Children have activities galore available to them with summer camps, sports teams, and events that are promoted by the township. There are eight parks and one community center in the township. During the summer months, Lower Township hosts a free concert series.

The township is overseen by a council-manager form of government, consisting of five council members who serve four-year terms on a staggered basis. These council members include the mayor, a council member at large, and three wards. Lower Township is located within the 2nd Congressional district and part of the 1st state legislative district. Students are served by the Lower Township School District where they attend prekindergarten through sixth grade. Beginning in seventh grade and continuing through 12th grade, students in Lower Township attend school in the Lower Cape May Regional School District.

Lower Township is comprised of more than 31 square miles and borders the neighboring areas of Middle Township, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, Cape May, West Cape May, Cape May Point, the Delaware Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. With its close proximity to the ocean and waterways, Lower Township residents can enjoy typical water activities including swimming, fishing, crabbing, sailing, and kayaking. Shopping and dining establishments are nearby.

Unlike much of the barrier islands that empty out at the end of the summer season following that three month seasonal population increase, Lower Township stays consistent throughout the year. People settle here because they prefer to be close to the beaches but don't want the high expense that comes with that shore residence. Lower Township residents can enjoy the free beaches of the Wildwoods and are close enough to Atlantic City to be employed there.
